Why can't I manually enter my A-Number on every page of Form I-485?
If you're completing Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status, you may notice something confusing: the A-Number box appears at the top of many pages, but you can't click into those boxes and type your Alien Registration Number manually.
In many cases, this is intentional.
The I-485 PDF is designed so that you enter your A-Number once in the main A-Number question, and the PDF automatically copies it into the A-Number field displayed at the top of the other pages.
That means the repeated A-Number boxes aren't necessarily separate fields you need to complete yourself.
Where do I enter my A-Number on Form I-485?
In the edition discussed by applicants using the latest I-485 PDF, the controlling A-Number field is located at:
Page 2 → Part 1 → Question 4
The form first asks whether you have an Alien Registration Number (A-Number).
If you answer Yes, you can enter your A-Number in the field that appears with that question.
The PDF can then automatically populate the A-Number boxes on the other pages.
Applicants initially reported that the repeated A-Number fields appeared broken because they couldn't type into them directly. After completing Question 4 using desktop Adobe Acrobat, however, users reported that the number populated throughout the form.
Why can't I edit the A-Number at the top of each page?
Those boxes are designed as auto-populated fields rather than normal text fields.
Instead of asking you to enter the same A-Number 20 or more times, the PDF pulls the information from the primary A-Number field.
Conceptually, that makes sense.
The confusing part is that the PDF doesn't make the relationship obvious. If you jump directly to Page 5 or Page 10 and click the A-Number box, it simply appears locked.
There may be no clear indication that you need to return to an earlier question to populate it.
What if my A-Number still doesn't appear on the other pages?
The PDF viewer you use may matter.
Applicants testing the I-485 reported that the automatic A-Number behavior worked in the desktop Adobe Acrobat application but did not work properly when they opened the same form in Google Chrome.
If the A-Number isn't populating:
Download the official I-485 PDF to your computer.
Open the downloaded file using desktop Adobe Acrobat.
Complete the form from the beginning.
Find the main A-Number question in Part 1.
Answer Yes if applicable.
Enter your A-Number in the field provided.
Check the A-Number box at the top of later pages.
Users in the same discussion also found that some interactive I-485 fields rely on JavaScript. When JavaScript was disabled in Acrobat, conditional fields didn't behave correctly; enabling it allowed the fields to work as expected.
Don't type a different A-Number on each page
If the repeated fields are working correctly, you shouldn't need to independently enter the number on every page.
One advantage of automatic population is consistency: entering the A-Number once reduces the chance of accidentally mistyping it on one page.
Before submitting your form, however, you should still review the completed PDF and make sure the A-Number appears correctly everywhere it is expected.
